Butterfly Garden is a focused 5-species native plant collection designed to support butterflies not just as visitors, but as breeding relatives. Each species serves as a host plant, providing essential egg-laying habitat and nourishment for caterpillars, while also offering nectar for a wide range of pollinators.

All seeds are individually packaged, allowing intentional placement and long-term garden design. This collection is well suited to Ontario and Quebec, thriving in sunny to lightly mixed conditions.

What’s inside

  • Asclepias tuberosa (Butterfly Weed) – Host plant for Monarchs and sometimes Queen butterflies; bright summer nectar source

  • Ceanothus americanus (New Jersey Tea) – Host for spring and summer Azure butterflies,  nitrogen-fixing shrub

  • Desmodium canadense (Showy Tick Trefoil) – Host plant for Skippers and Eastern-Tailed Blue butterflies; improves soil health

  • Symphyotrichum cordifolium (Heart-leaved Aster) – Host for Checkerspot and Pearl Crescent butterflies; vital fall nectar

  • Zizia aurea (Golden Alexanders) – Hosts Swallowtails and nourishes spring-emerging species

Together, these plants support at least five different butterfly species, spanning early, mid, and late season life cycles.

Designed for living systems

This is not a tidy ornamental mix. Caterpillar feeding, leaf damage, and seed set are signs of success. These species are best planted where they can mature, reseed, and quietly sustain the next generation of insects.

Seven-generational thinking

Butterflies survive through continuity of habitat, not abundance of flowers alone. By planting host plants that return year after year, this garden becomes part of a longer story, supporting migration routes, local breeding populations, and ecological knowledge carried forward through living land.

Ideal for gardeners ready to move from “pollinator friendly” toward true relationship with the land and its winged nations.
