About Us

We are Good Native Plants, a Mi'kmaq-led non-profit working simultaneously towards the preservation of Indigenous wildlife and ancestral ways of being through what we call: ecological decolonization. Alternatively: native plant gardening.

We envision a future where keeping a tidy grass lawn begs hearing the question "Do you use it for sports...or something?"

Indigenous and western ecological sciences have finally converged on the idea that native plants, the ones which co-evolved here intertwined with local peoples, pollinators, and other forms of native life, are a superior planting choice for those with both power and desire to plant something.

That is why we sell native seeds. We only charge for them so that we can continue to ethically harvest, process, and purchase more of them, to distribute to more people who will hopefully give them a shot at growing into plants who will help heal and 'Indigify' their environment.

Decolonizing your lawn or garden represents a wholistic approach to landscaping that honors biodiversity, sustainability, and cultural diversity. Traditional 'colonizer' land management perpetuates ecologically destructive practices such as introducing invasive and/or exotic plants, and monocultures, which can be described as ecologically incompetent. We offer the gateway to an alternative. Garden instead with the same plants as the peoples who lived here thousands of years ago, and watch that colonizer status symbol transform into a haven for life of all kinds. It may even reconnect you with nature, in addition to storing carbon while preserving biodiversity, water, and Indigenous cultural heritage.
